The title and description are your ad in the search results, and they’re often written last, in a rush. This tool shows you the result before it goes live, so you can fix the cut-off word or the missing keyword while it’s still cheap.

How to use it

  1. Paste your title tag, meta description and the page URL.
  2. Add the main keyword you’re targeting, if you have one.
  3. Watch the preview update as you type, and work through anything marked Fix or Check.

What makes a good snippet

  • Lead with the thing people searched for. Searchers scan the first few words of each result.
  • Say what’s on the page, specifically. “Free calculator, no sign-up” beats “The ultimate guide”.
  • Use the description to earn the click. Google bolds words that match the search, so include the keyword naturally.
  • Don’t stuff it. Over-optimised titles are the ones Google rewrites.

Questions

Why pixels and not characters?

Google cuts titles by width, not character count. "WWWW" takes far more room than "iiii". The tool measures your text in Arial at Google's sizes, so the preview cuts where Google would.

What are the limits?

Roughly 580 pixels for a title and around 920 pixels (two lines) for a description on desktop. Google moves these around now and then, so treat them as guides.

Google rewrote my title anyway. Why?

Google rewrites titles it thinks don't match the page or the query, often when they're stuffed with keywords or too long. A clear, accurate title that fits is the best way to keep yours.
